Meymand — Ancient Rock Village & UNESCO Heritage in Iran is a living troglodyte landscape in Kerman Province, where rock-cut architecture, long-standing local traditions and a human relationship with a harsh environment are still visible today.

Archaeological discoveries in and around Meymand — including stone engravings and pottery deposits — point to human presence in this landscape stretching back to the Mesolithic / Stone Age (archaeologists and field reports put activity in the area as far back as ~10,000–12,000 years ago). The village’s hand-dug cave houses, as we see them now, have been continuously used for millennia (commonly reported as c.2,000–3,000 years of continuous habitation).

Meymand’s cultural system — semi-nomadic agro-pastoralism, seasonal migration between mountain pastures and winter cave dwellings, local qanat water management and rock-carved architecture — is the reason it was recognized and protected as a distinct cultural landscape. The community’s conservation efforts were internationally acknowledged when Meymand won the UNESCO-Greece Melina Mercouri International Prize for the Safeguarding and Management of Cultural Landscapes in 2005.
