Opening street parade of Barcelona’s oldest festival, Festa Major de Sant Roc, featuring the iconic giant-head Cu-cut riding a donkey. Drums, cheers, and living tradition in the Barri Gòtic by the Cathedral.
Why the oldest? In 1583, a plague hit Barcelona and, legend says, Saint Roch (Sant Roc) arrived that year. He caught the disease but survived thanks to a baker’s dog that brought him bread; while he stayed within the Roman walls, no neighbor died. Grateful residents began celebrating Sant Roc in 1589, and the festival endures to this day.
