Kenya’s true name traces back to a sacred peak, Mt Kirinyaga, meaning “mountain of whiteness” in the Kikuyu language, a reference to its snow-capped summit. To the Kikuyu, this was no ordinary mountain; it was God’s dwelling place, the home of Ngai, and the resting place of ancestors. This original name of Kenya reflected deep spiritual and cultural roots long before colonial rule.

When European explorers arrived, guided by the Akamba people, they heard the name as “Kiinyaa.” Missionaries like Krapf and Rebmann recorded it, and over time the spelling shifted to Kenya. In 1920, the British officially renamed the East Africa Protectorate as Kenya Colony, after its highest mountain.
