HAY, AHÍ, and AY sound almost the same — but they mean completely different things 👇
👉 HAY = there is / there are
Comes from the verb "haber" — use it to say something exists or is somewhere.
🔹 Hay un gato en la calle (There's a cat in the street)
🔹 No hay dinero (There's no money)
👉 AHÍ = there (location)
Points to a place — answers the question "where?"
🔹 El baño está ahí (The bathroom is there)
🔹 Deja el bolso ahí (Leave the bag there)
👉 AY = ouch / oh! (interjection)
Expresses emotion — pain, surprise, fear, excitement.
🔹 ¡Ay, me duele la cabeza! (Ouch, my head hurts!)
🔹 ¡Ay, qué lindo! (Oh, how cute!)
💡 Quick tricks to remember:
➡️ Can you replace it with "there is/are"? → HAY
➡️ Can you point to it? → AHÍ
➡️ Is it an emotion or sound? → AY
