Is the Original Shantae a Good Game?

The Shantae series has been getting a lot of love recently. From the release of Shantae and the Seven Sirens around a year back to the upcoming Shantae collection for PlayStation 5, Wayforward's half-genie platforming series seems to be going through a surge in popularity and support.

But is the original Shantae for Game Boy Color worth playing in 2021? Though original copies can sell for hundreds of dollars online, it was recently given a re-release on the Nintendo Switch, along with a physical re-release for the Game Boy Color itself by Limited Run Games. Being the first game in the series, though, is this 2002 Metroidvania worth playing today, or is it too rife with growing pains?
