AU explanation(s): I'm mixing things between Harry Potter and Merlin (it's not really important, especially not in this part but); in Canon HP, Merlin was born around 982 and went to Hogwarts when he was 11. In Merlin BBC, there is no set date (as far as I know) as to when the show takes place - just sometimes between 500 and 1500. In Merlin, he was already 15 or so when he went to Camelot and he didn't study magic in a school so let's make it that he was a lot older when he met the Founders, and, I don't know - they became friends and they invited him to Hogwarts. And, as per tradition, he went under the Hat and was sorted into Slytherin.
