America and Iran just. can’t. make. up. their. Minds. Over the past 48 hours the two have gone from threatening to start a regional war to hoping that a new nuclear deal can be struck. Trump hasn’t been shy about teasing military strikes on Iran.

Some US allies tried to say their airspace and land couldn’t be used for strikes. But America has big boats for that, so it doesn't really matter. In return Iran’s leader made it clear that “the Americans must be aware that if they wage a war this time, it will be a regional war.”

Ever the diplomat, Trump’s response was “we’ll find out.” Both sides would always add the little asterisk that they were open to negotiations. What are they even negotiating though?

Originally Trump’s position seemed to support the anti-government protests. Now it looks like the priorities have shifted to focusing more on Iran’s nuclear program. Iran is open to the idea and even said it was optimistic that could happen. Talks are expected to happen Friday for the first time since last June. And if one isn’t reached, Trump is still threatening that those big ships nearby are ready to make changes.
