How to Reach Machu Picchu Lima Peru
1. Fly to Peru
The nearest international airport is Jorge Chávez International Airport (LIM) in Lima, Peru.
From Lima, take a domestic flight to Alejandro Velasco Astete International Airport (CUZ) in Cusco, the gateway to Machu Picchu.
2. Travel from Cusco to Aguas Calientes (Machu Picchu Town)
There are three main ways to get closer to Machu Picchu from Cusco:
By Train (Most Popular & Comfortable)
Take a train from Poroy (20 min from Cusco) or Ollantaytambo (2 hours from Cusco) to Aguas Calientes.
Train services: PeruRail and Inca Rail (various classes, from budget to luxury).
Travel time: 1.5 to 3.5 hours, depending on the departure station.
By Trekking (For Adventure Lovers)
Inca Trail (4 days, 3 nights) – The most famous trek with stunning scenery and ancient Incan sites.
Salkantay Trek (5 days, 4 nights) – A scenic alternative through glaciers and cloud forests.
Lares Trek (3-4 days) – A cultural trek through Andean villages.
By Bus + Train (Budget Option)
Take a bus or shared van from Cusco to Hidroeléctrica (6-7 hours).
Walk (2-3 hours) or take a short train ride to Aguas Calientes.
3. Travel from Aguas Calientes to Machu Picchu
By Bus: 25-minute ride up the mountain ($12-$24 round-trip).
By Hike: 1.5-2 hours up steep stairs (free but physically demanding).
Best Time to Visit
Dry Season (May–September): Best weather, but crowded.
Wet Season (November–March): Fewer tourists, but frequent rain.
