Jalaluddin alias Chhangur Baba, the alleged mastermind behind a massive religious conversion racket, was arrested from a hotel in Lucknow along with his close aide Neetu alias Nasreen. Operating under the guise of Hazrat Peer Baba, he ran conversion drives from the Chand Auliya Dargah in Balrampur, Uttar Pradesh. The racket targeted vulnerable individuals through coercion, manipulation and financial lures.

Investigations revealed that Baba amassed over ₹106 crore across 40 bank accounts, mostly funded from Gulf nations. Properties worth crores were acquired in Balrampur, Lonavala and other cities. These assets included illegal structures like a private hospital, madrasa and a mansion which has since been demolished by authorities.

One of the most disturbing aspects was a caste-based rate card found in the mastermind’s diary, assigning conversion costs ranging from ₹8 to ₹16 lakh depending on the victim’s caste. Women, minors and the poor were allegedly lured with promises of marriage, jobs and miracles. His associate Neetu allegedly converted her entire family, including her daughter whose certificate was issued by Dubai’s Islamic Affairs Department.

The UP ATS and Enforcement Directorate are now investigating links to foreign radical groups and sleeper cells. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath called the case anti-national and pledged bulldozer justice. Several cases including a missing girl in Ghaziabad have now been linked to this network, indicating a wider reach and deeper planning.

This case exposes how caste, poverty, gender and faith were exploited to build a covert empire that thrived on secrecy and influence. More arrests and revelations are expected as authorities continue to unravel this multi-layered syndicate.
