Scottish Labour leader Anas Sarwar is expected to call on Keir Starmer to stand down as prime minister, at a news conference scheduled for this afternoon
Anas Sarwar’s frustration with the prime minister has been growing and now he is about to become the highest-profile serving Labour politician to call for him to go. Every time he has tried to get on the front foot in the Scottish election campaign, he seems to have been deflected by Westminster controversy and questions over Keir Starmer’s leadership.
Scottish Labour are badly trailing the SNP in opinion polls for Holyrood voting intention and their calculation seems to be that things are unlikely to get much better if Starmer remains in charge.
On Thursday, Sarwar said the PM could stay and would still be in post at the time of May’s elections.
It’s not clear whether he wants him to stand down immediately or to remain as caretaker while a leadership contest is arranged. In any event, Starmer himself seems determined to stay put and there is not an obvious successor.
