The Gauteng Freeway Improvement Project or GFIP. GFIP is set to change the face of Gauteng roads because of what it offers. New technology and engineering that enhances safety and reduces costs, improves productivity and offers operational savings for the freight industry. GFIP is a ambitious and long term project which commenced in 2007. Construction was started in 2008 with the first phase of 185km been earmarked for completion in 2011. It aims to upgrade or build 560km of road and tackle several significantly overcrowded intersections around the province.
