NAM-1975 was released in arcades in 1990 by SNK. It's a Cabal-like gallery shooter set in the time of the Vietnam war. It's a very accurate retelling of history.

You can only move left and right at the bottom of the screen and you control a cross-hair used to aim at enemies. You don't control your character and the cross-hair separately, which takes a bit of getting used to.
You can also run and do a dodge roll that gives you i-frames. In order to do the dodge roll you have to hold diagonal left or right and then press C. It's quite an awkward input, I'm not sure why they didn't just put roll on a separate button, there was even room for it!
The roll is very useful but you're also a sitting duck when it ends so mastering it requires some finesse.
Without autofire you can't move while you're shooting.

Speaking off autofire, autofire does help in this game. However a too high rate will give you diminished returns. After a bit of testing it was found that 20 hertz is optimal, the woman helper will also be powered up with this rate.
While autofire does help on your default gun, it makes the Balcan and Fire weapons worse. So either avoid them or set up a separate shot button without auto.

Besides the main weapons you also have grenades. These do a lot of damage and also cause splash damage. Besides the normal grenades there are also special grenades that are extremely powerful and cover a large area.

During the first four stages there's a 20% chance of an extra boss appearing after beating the boss of the stage. These are quite a bit tougher than the normal bosses and give a lot of points.

Scoring in this game is extremely luck-based and basically gambling. The score items dropped from enemies is fixed, but the score value of all the items that drop from the walls is completely random. This varies from 200 points to 10,000 points...
For high scoring you also NEED to get the extra bosses but there's only a 20% chance of them appearing per stage...
I only got two out of four extra bosses this run.
It's also pretty random how long you can survive the timeout patterns during stage 5 boss barrel milk.

Supposedly there is a way to always trigger the extra bosses but I and other people couldn't really get it to work:    • NAM-1975 - How to trigger all extra stages...  

The game has a good and bad ending. If you game over on the final boss you'll be immediately sent to the bad ending. You don't get a chance to continue.
