500 to 1000 fingerlings can be stocked for single culture of native horn fish. 8-10 pitch roe, cuttlefish, grasscarp, mrigel fish fry should be released in ponds of 4-5 inch size per cent. The pond environment is good if some fish such as carp are released.
Selection of pond Several things should be observed during the selection of pond-1. The pond must be flood free. 2. The banks of the pond must be strong. If there is any kind of hole, all horn fish will be gone. 3. During rains the height of water will not be more than 4 feet - a pond should be selected. 4. Good results are obtained if the pond is rectangular5. The size of the pond should be between 40-50 percent. 6. One end should be sloped 1 foot more than the other end.
POND PREPARATION It is better to grow hornfish in old ponds than in new ponds. In case of a new pond, it should be well tilled and at least 20 kg of dung per percent and well leveled and then lime should be applied. If it is an old pond, it should be irrigated and dried first. Then lime should be given at the rate of 1 kg per cent. It should be well fenced with netting all around. After netting around, 2-3 feet of clean water should be given in the pond with a shallow engine. Seedlings should emerge within 2-3 days of watering. A net of one inch of netting should be kept after hatching.
