A brief video about Zhuozhou shibuxian (涿州十不闲), a genre of traditional accompanied narrative singing (Chinese: shuochang, 说唱) from Zhuozhou (涿州市), northeastern Baoding (保定市), central Hebei province (河北省), northern China, bordering Beijing to the north.
Zhuozhou shibuxian, which originated in the late Ming Dynasty, combines elements of lianhualao (莲花落), another genre of traditional narrative singing, giving it distinct comic elements. Accompaniment is typically provided by a single performer who plays numerous traditional percussion instruments including a drum, gongs, and cymbals in one-man band fashion. Although Zhuozhou shibuxian's singers (usually numbering either one or two at a time) may sometimes perform in costume and face paint in the manner of Chinese opera (Chinese: xiqu, 戏曲), it is not considered a full-fledged Chinese opera genre.
Probably filmed in Zhuozhou (涿州市), northeastern Baoding (保定市), central Hebei province (河北省), northern China, c. April 14, 2017.
In 2006 the tradition of Zhuozhou shibuxian was included in the First Batch of the Hebei Province Province-Level Intangible Cultural Heritage List (河北省第一批省级非物质文化遗产名录).
