The sound of cannons opening fire ring across a field in the Ukrainian town of Urzuf, about 45 kilometres southwest of the government-held city of Mariupol, as forces loyal to Kyiv use a lull in ongoing battles in the east to train new fighters. Ukraine's Azov battalion, which started as a ragtag team of volunteers who formed to defend the port city in southeastern Ukraine, are conducting military training for new members of their fighting unit.
