The JR Tokaidō Line refers to two major railways in Japan: the historic Tōkaidō Main Line and the modern Tōkaidō Shinkansen. Both are vital transport arteries connecting Tokyo with Osaka, Kyoto, and beyond.
Nebukawa Station, in Odawara, Kanagawa, opened in 1922. Just a year later, on September 1, 1923, the Great Kantō Earthquake struck. A massive landslide and debris flow swept the station, train, and passengers down the cliff into the sea. The station building, platforms, and seven train cars were destroyed, killing over 300 people.
The tragedy became one of the most devastating railway disasters in Japan’s history. A new Nebukawa Station was later rebuilt on safer ground, and today it still operates on the Tokaidō Main Line. Memorials near the site honor the victims and remind visitors of the disaster
