Presentation of the Family Friendly Museum Award winning project as the Best Museum Youth Group in 2024.
The Young Producers are a group of 16 to 25-year-olds who have a say and plan events and exhibitions across Tees Valley Museums in the north-east of England. Young people are given real agency through use of their own budget to support making their ideas happen and are also able to access exclusive opportunities to learn about careers in heritage. The programme is designed for and by young people, ensuring it is relevant and inclusive, supporting young people to access and engage with heritage on their own terms, in one of the most deprived areas of the UK.
Presented by Heather Minto & Emma Tennant
Children and Young Person Officer, Heather Minto, works with thousands of children, young people and their families across five local authority museums in the Tees Valley every year. Her role at Tees Valley Museums is to develop programmes across a consortium of museums which support audiences who are least able to engage with heritage. She has led the development of two nationally award-winning programmes since joining two years ago and believes passionately in the power of culture to change lives and everybody’s right to be able to access it.
Emma Tennant's passion for heritage began when she was 14 and began stewarding at her local museum, she had gone from there to being a director for a heritage and information centre, and now she is a Young Producer which she believes to have been the best introduction to heritage career yet. She is enthusiastic and proud about the projects that the Young Producers have done and are getting to do for young people in museums.
