Benjamin Franklin once lived on a simple cornmeal and water gruel so plain it became known as “sawdust pudding.” Nearly two centuries later, America’s hoboes during the Great Depression ate equally frugal meals around the campfire.

In this video, I recreate Franklin’s infamous “sawdust pudding” and show how it connects to the simple survival food of the 1930s hobo. Bland, cheap, but filling — this meal was more about freedom and frugality than flavor.
