We thought we had seen the last of her, but the "Old Salt" of the fleet had one more surprise for us.
A few months ago, we watched the USS Nimitz (CVN 68) depart San Diego for what we believed was the final time. But last week, the lead ship of her class returned to the bay for a historic final visit before embarking on her ultimate mission: Southern Seas 2026.
This isn't just a transit; it’s the beginning of the end of an era. Nimitz is heading to Norfolk, Virginia, to begin the decommissioning process in 2027, but she’s taking the "long way" around Cape Horn, visiting partner nations across South America for one last deployment.
Fair winds and following seas, Nimitz. San Diego will miss the silhouette of CVN 68 on our horizon.
