Back on the 31st July 1997, I was lucky enough, while visiting Holmfirth on a family holiday, to witness a scene from the BBC comedy series 'Last of the Summer Wine' being filmed. This scene would go on to be part of the episode "Truly and the Hole Truth", which was the third episode of Series 19 of the long-running comedy.
Following the departure of Brian Wilde as Walter "Foggy" Dewhurst at the end of the previous series, Frank Thornton (known for playing Captain Peacock in 'Are You Being Served?') took on the "third man" role of the trio that also included William "Compo" Simmonite and Norman "Cleggy" Clegg, played by Bill Owen and Peter Sallis, respectively, with the new character of Herbert "Truly of the Yard" Truelove being introduced at the start of the new series. Frank Thornton would remain with the cast until the series was cancelled in 2010.
Sadly, Bill Owen died in 1999, Frank Thornton died in 2013, and Peter Sallis died in 2017. Both Bill's and Peter's final resting place is in the churchyard of St John's Church on the Upperthong Lane, just a short distance from the centre of Holmfirth, where the series was based, complete with the famous Sid's Café.
The episode would go on to air on BBC One on Sunday, 18th January 1998.
