Have you ever wondered why urban space gets different behavior than suburban space? So did we! Over the last 4 years, the team at UCF examined the SHRP2 NDS data and identified the surprising key to this behavior change: people! We are hardwired to notice faces and bodies differently than we notice anything else and it changes how we drive. Unfortunately, when people are too far away or when we're moving too fast, we give up.
This video has 3 major sections:
An overview of the research with a bonus primer on reading multivariate analysis
A deep dive into what environmental factors impact speed and why with prediction formulas for urban roads
A strategy for implementing these findings into roadway and community design
This presentation was delivered April 18, 2023 on behalf of FDOT by Dr. Patricia Tice in partial fulfilment of Task 5 of the UCF Mental Frameworks project (Contract BDV24 TWO 977-34).
