Public outrage reached a boiling point in Indian River County on Thursday as nearly 200 residents packed a Planning and Zoning meeting to speak out against a land acquisition company known as Epic Estates.
The tension stems from a viral petition with over 1,000 signatures and social media posts alleging that the group has ties to "Epic City," a controversial proposed Muslim community in Josephine, Texas, which has been the subject of state and federal investigations.
During the meeting, officials addressed the crowd directly, with commission Chair Johnathan Day stating, “You were misled by Facebook,” as they worked to clear up confusion surrounding the company's local intentions.
