Traumatization makes it harder for the vagus nerve to move the body out of fight-or-flight into regulation, but stimulating it can improve its function.
In fact, over time, we can restore vagus nerve function to draw the nervous system into a baseline of regulation, where the body can move into homeostasis.
In homeostasis, the body can better regulate hormones, clear infection, detox, and repair at a cellular level.
There are also emotional benefits! We experience increased peace, vitality, and freedom when the body comes out of chronic survival mode into a state of rest.
