A recent cluster of tornadoes in eastern North Carolina has caused the people who live there to be concerned that they live in a new hotspot for severe weather.
Within a span of nearly 12 hours, three EF-1 tornadoes tore through Edgecombe County last week between May 12-13. Those add to the list of destructive storms in the area over the last five years.
During the April 19, 2019, outbreak, there was a pair of EF-1 tornadoes just north of Rocky Mount in Nash and Edgecombe counties.
The following month, on May 13, 2019, an EF-2 tornado touched down in Wake County before tracking into Nash County.
On Sept. 5, 2019, during Hurricane Dorian, there was a short-lived EF-1 tornado just east of downtown Wilson.
On July 19, 2023, an EF-3 tornado tracked through Nash and Edgecombe counties, destroying 89 buildings, including the Pfizer plant.
On Aug. 9, 2024, during Tropical Storm Debby, an EF-3 tornado hit the town of Lucama in Wilson County.
On Sept. 27, 2024, during Hurricane Helene, another EF-3 tornado briefly tracked across Highway 301 in Rocky Mount.
