There are 3 types of electoral systems in the world - Plurality Electoral Systems, Majority Electoral Systems and Proportional Representation. Plurality System, also known as First Past The Post (FTPT) has been used in India since 1950. In this system, only the candidate with the maximum votes forms the government, whereas other candidates are given nominal seats in the Lok Sabha. This system defies democracy because it gives maximum power to parties even if they haven't received more than 50% of the total votes. For example, BJP won the 2014 elections because of the FPTP system.
Proportional Representation is highly suggested by analysts in India as it allocates Lok Sabha seats in proportion to the votes received. But Proportional Representation is not a viable system in India where there are multiple parties. It gives better results in a two-party system like in the US and UK.
