Code reviews are essential to maintaining the health of a codebase and for the growth of engineers on the team. Many of us were never taught best practices though; we’ve instead picked it up from seeing what works (or more likely what doesn’t).
Unfortunately, bad habits abound. For authors, this ranges from the small (failing to proofread code) to the large (massive pull requests that attempt to do too many things). The same is true for reviewers, like repetitive comments or the dreaded “as long as you’re in this file…” It’s easy to feel overwhelmed or bullied as the recipient of a particularly critical review, feeding into imposter syndrome and burnout.
This talk will identify common bad habits, and put forth guidelines for both author and reviewer. The focus is not only process, but also people; how do you ensure the team stays positive when giving feedback? You’ll leave as a better individual participant in a code review, but more importantly with steps to foster an overall healthier review culture.
