In this heated Radio 2 debate, Matthew Lesh, Director of Public Policy & Communications at the IEA, makes the case against nationalising UK water companies. Lesh argues that privatisation has led to hundreds of billions of pounds in investment, far exceeding dividends paid out. He points out that this investment has resulted in more efficient systems, lower bills, and improved performance in areas like leakage reduction and supply interruptions.
Lesh cautions against the simplistic view that nationalisation would solve all problems, highlighting the enormous cost to taxpayers – an estimated £90 billion just to acquire the infrastructure, plus hundreds of billions more for improvements. He emphasises that the recent increase in reported sewage leaks is largely due to improved monitoring and accounting practices, not necessarily worsening conditions.
While Eleanor Shearer from Common Wealth argues for public ownership, Lesh maintains that the current system, with proper regulation, can drive efficiency and improvements more effectively than government control. He asserts that the regulator already determines investment levels and allowable profits, suggesting that any desired changes could be implemented within the existing framework without the massive costs and potential drawbacks of nationalisation.
