Gyromitra brunnea or the elephant ear mushroom is one of the most common false morels in the Upper Midwest. They have a funky shape like a few wrinkled ears pressed together and appear strictly in hardwood forests-not with conifers.
In the video I go over a little of the background on this genus and some of the new research that's been done that shows this species, along with a few others, are just as safe to eat as morels. That said, they're mild and uninteresting and I don't pick them to eat personally. People that say Gyromitra are as good as morels are probably just excited about the new research that's been done on them, and likely not very good at finding morels themselves, imo.
Either way, learning about your local Gyromitra species will make you a better morel hunter.
