Mitsubishi has chosen the Montreal Auto Show to unveil the 2026 evolution of its best-selling plug-in hybrid SUV, the Outlander PHEV. The updated model introduces meaningful cabin refinements and, more importantly, a new electrified powertrain that now delivers up to 71 kilometres of electric-only driving.
• The Outlander gets a light overall refresh
• The battery goes from 20 kWh to 22,7 kWh
• Electric driving range improves to 72 kilometres
The Outlander PHEV remains a cornerstone of Mitsubishi’s Canadian lineup. Although sales softened in 2025 following reductions in government incentives, the model continues to rank among the most popular compact plug-in hybrid SUVs in Canada.
Subtle Exterior Updates for 2026
Following its global update cycle, the 2026 Outlander PHEV receives a series of refinements that may appear modest on paper but contribute to improved functionality, ergonomics and overall efficiency.
From a design standpoint, the plug-in hybrid aligns with the exterior updates introduced on gasoline-powered Outlander models for 2025. Changes include a slightly revised grille, updated front and rear bumpers, new 18- and 20-inch wheel designs, and darker-tinted taillight lenses. These updates help maintain visual continuity across the lineup while supporting long-term resale value.
A More Refined and Technologically Advanced Cabin
Interior changes are more substantial. Mitsubishi highlights a more premium onboard experience thanks to improved sound insulation, updated materials and new colour combinations.
Standard and available equipment has also been upgraded. Front seats are now both heated and ventilated, the charging-cable storage area has been redesigned for easier access, and the centre console has been fully reworked to improve day-to-day usability.
Two major technological upgrades stand out. The 2026 Outlander PHEV introduces a new Yamaha-developed Dynamic Sound audio system, along with a larger 12.3-inch multimedia touchscreen. This represents a significant improvement over the previous 8- and 9-inch displays offered on earlier models.
Same Engine
Mitsubishi keeps the 2.4-litre naturally aspirated four-cylinder engine. Torque figures remain the same at 332 lb-ft. The dual electric motors carry over unchanged, producing 85 kW (114 hp) at the front and 100 kW (134 hp) at the rear. This setup continues to support Mitsubishi’s S-AWC all-wheel-drive system, a key differentiator in the compact PHEV SUV segment.
Larger Battery and Improved Electric Range
Battery capacity increases from 20 kWh to 22.7 kWh for 2026. As a result, electric driving range improves from 61 kilometres to 72 kilometres, representing an 18 percent increase compared to the 2025 model year.
Mitsubishi also references revised suspension and steering tuning and new tire specifications, which will need to be evaluated during Canadian media drives once the vehicle officially launches.
Canadian Availability and Pricing
Mitsubishi confirms that the 2026 Outlander PHEV will arrive in Canadian dealerships starting in March 2026.
Pricing for the base model increases by $1,800, bringing the starting MSRP from $48,698 to $50,498 before taxes and incentives.
