Väinö Raitio (1891 - 1945) - Legenda, Op. 20 No. 1 (1920)
Ville Urponen, organ (2008)
Legenda is a work for solo organ by Väinö Raitio, typically lasting around 6 minutes. Raitio may have been inspired to compose Legenda while studying organ with Armas Maasalo, and the work is dedicated to Elis Mårtenson. Although it is listed as Op. 20 No. 1, there do not seem to be any other surviving works in his Op. 20.
"The Legenda of 1920 already offers a more advanced style, with prominent chromaticism and daring dissonances. Here harmony takes precedence over melody, and Scriabin's influence is discernible. The piece, notated throughout in G-sharp minor, ends unexpectedly with a kind of plagal cadence in A minor."

*This sheet music was engraved in MuseScore from manuscripts available online from the National Library of Finland. For this piece, there are two manuscripts that differ at points, so I primarily used the file named p135-07_legenda.pdf, which seems to be a more finalized copy. I mostly tried to preserve Raitio's own markings, voicings, etc., making only a few small changes for readability. I also attempted to include all of the organ performance directions he wrote, but I am not familiar with organ performance/notation, so I may have made some mistakes. Any feedback on how to improve my engraving is appreciated! The score is available at: https://musescore.com/user/32821478/s... *
