A spoiler free look at one of my all time favorite short stories, Ray Bradbury's "Usher II" pays homage many of Edgar Allen Poe's most famous tales including: “The Tell-Tale Heart,” “The Pit in the Pendulum,” “The Premature Burial,” “The Cask of Amontillado,” “The Murders in the Rue Morgue,” “The Masque of the Red Death,” and of course, “The Fall of the House of Usher.”
Usher II is a love letter to Poe, movies, space, and imagination. But like many of Bradbury works, it’s also a cautionary tale. With it’s 1950 publication, Bradbury simultaneously reflects on the book burnings of Nazi Germany as well as foreshadows the rise of McCarthyism in the US. But modern readers will also hear echoes of the narrator's tale about a world so concerned with being correct, that no artist or work is safe from cancelation. Like anything I’ve read from Bradbury, Usher II is both timely and timeless.
