Kirsten and Akir sit down with Paula Molina, a Colombian biodesigner, researcher, and educator, to explore her groundbreaking project Printing Herbarium — a living experiment that grows moss patterns onto fabric through hacked screen-printing techniques. At the intersection of textiles, science, and sustainability, Paula reimagines surface design by collaborating with living organisms to create slow, evolving, and regenerative materials.
As a founding member of the Biodesign Collective, Paula shares her vision of a community lab in Colombia, tapping into the country's rich biodiversity and cultural knowledge to advance biodesign locally. She also reflects on her early project RootKnit, her journey through the Biodesign Challenge, and the importance of patience, honesty, and practicality in working with living systems.
How can we co-create with nature instead of designing against it? What does it mean to build tools and environments that support life? And how can moss, microbes, and artificial lichen point us toward living, breathing materiality?
