On Today's Episode of "What NOT To Do In Your First PA Job:"
Jason Astrin, DMSc, PA-C, DFAAPA, Director of APP Services at McKesson, offers new grads and others looking to break into the PA profession sound career advice to help YOU break into the oncology field.
For Astrin, it's about taking every opportunity to learn everything you can to develop your clinical skills by doing the "extra" leg work and clinical relationship development WITHOUT being prompted. It's about driving your own success and excellence.
Astrin describes his own unlikely Hero's Journey studying to be a lab tech while in the Army. During this time, he was first exposed to the PA profession. The Army program was affiliated with the University Of Oklahoma's PA Program, giving him the same exposure to PA training as any other PA.
After graduating, Astrin spent his first ten years of clinical practice in family medicine. That fundamental clinical exposure was the foundation for his later subspecializations in cardiology/pulmonology and, ultimately, community oncology practice leadership.
In Astrin's current role, he is primarily responsible for serving 40+ McKesson-affiliated private physician practices across the US with their APP planning, candidate sourcing, vetting, hiring, and onboarding. He maintains relationships with PA programs across the US, serving to provide precepting opportunities for their students. His experience in new PA training and hiring is virtually unparalleled. Therefore, his advice to pre-PAs and PA students is invaluable as they consider a career in oncology medicine.
For PA job applicants, Astrin overviews the resume screening process, the interview process, and the "red" and "green" flags candidates exhibit during the selection process. Perhaps the most crucial advice Astrin offers new grad PAs is about knowing your "why" and how that passion aligns with the organization's mission, core values, and the role itself.
The podcast contains interview tips, including PA interview questions and answers, interview questions PA should ask, physician assistant salary insights, and other insider secrets on how to get hired.
