This work, whose movements are titled “Lebewohl” (Farewell), “Abwesenheit” (Absence), and “Das Wiedersehen” (The Return), was composed for Archduke Rudolf (1788–1831), Beethoven’s devoted patron and pupil, between 1809 and 1810, following the Archduke’s departure from and return to Vienna during the War of the Fifth Coalition. When war broke out between France and Austria in April 1809 and Napoleon’s forces entered Vienna in May, the Archduke left the city about a week before the invasion; although eighteen years younger than Beethoven, he had studied with him since 1803 and shared a close personal bond. Structured in three movements, the sonata is renowned for its emotional depth and innovative design.

Titled “The Return,” this movement depicts the joyful reunion of Beethoven and Archduke Rudolf, characterized by energetic rhythms and lively themes that express the happiness of reunion.
