Excerpt from Festival Worship at Old South Church, Boston, 3/31/24 (Easter). The arrangement is by Richard Webster. Featuring the Old South Choir, the Old South Brass, and Mitchell Crawford, organist, with yours truly conducting.
"Christ the Lord is Risen Today" was written in 1739 by Charles Wesley, co-founder of Methodism, with the title "Hymn for Easter Day." Later that year, he published it in his hymnal "Hymns and Sacred Poems." It appeared in several other hymnals over the subsequent decades, and by 1780 or so it had become known in the Church of England.
There were originally eleven verses of four lines each, without the alleluias. When it was published in Thomas Butt's 1754 hymnal "Harmonia Sacra," it was paired with Handel's tune "Judas Maccabeus," adapted from his oratorio of the same name and now more commonly associated with the text "Thine is the Glory." Later it was adapted to the "Easter Hymn" melody. The alleluias were likely added at that time to make for a better fit.
