Many teachers and parents make this video part of the routine each day to build reading, spelling, and writing skills. It’s great for classrooms, both in-person and online. You can adapt the approach to be more challenging for advanced students and easier for new or struggling students. Research shows the importance of teaching sight words along with phonics, which we will discuss later.

Students at a higher level can use pencil and paper and attempt to write the words along with the video. If they are not yet skilled enough to write the words with the video, this can be an activity they practice later as you dictate each word slowly enough for young writers to keep up, cuing and assisting them as needed. It is common for kids to have difficulty writing. They will often print the letters backwards and complain how hard writing is. Using this video on a routine basis will take away some of the frustration and give the practice that is needed to gain reading and writing proficiency.
