The skills and tasks covered in the video are based upon those a UK apprentice stonemason or NVQ/SVQ (National /Scottish Vocational Qualification) stonemasonry student needs to demonstrate their competence and complete their first year of study. They are skills a mason uses daily and so are amongst the most useful to learn.

Chisels and other tools - To buy

The two of the most popular types of stone masonry chisels available are Steel and Tungsten. The beginner on a budget may want to start with the steel, also known as ‘Fire Sharp’ as they are less expensive than Tungsten tipped chisels. Please note that Tungsten tipped chisels do not require sharpening as frequently as Fire Sharp chisels. So do factor sharpening into your decision making.

Make sure that you buy chisels that are as close as possible to those used in the video course. The chisels demonstrated are for achieving high quality architectural finishes on a moderately hard limestone. Marble chisels are not the same, and chisels for very hard stone such as granite are different also. Granite tools are usually much larger, heavier and not made for making pieces such as in this course.

The following are example tools similar or the same as have been used in the video. You may be able to find equally good options or better for sale in your location.
