Pianist Ralph van Raat on Aerial: "One highlight of Fiumara’s oeuvre to date is his piano concerto Aerial (2009). This meditation for piano and orchestra has three movements, but is anything but a traditional concerto. The ambient first movement breathes an atmosphere of weightlessness and draws the ear into the harmonies of static sound. The middle movement is a Lied ohne Worte consisting of fragile ascending piano patterns above a melancholy chaconne that’s gradually taken over by the orchestra. The relatively ‘fast’ last movement is propelled by a syncopated piano motif with a counter melody in the winds. It’s interesting to note that the mood remains constant, as does the orchestral timbre; there’s almost no ‘development’ in the traditional sense. Time isn’t tamed, but put on display. In this way Aerial creates the impression of wide-open spaces that steadily unfold before us.
