The number of people killed in protests in Iran has risen to 5,000. The highest number of deaths was reported from Kurdish-majority areas. Among the dead, around 500 were members of the security forces.
The protests began on 28 December against rising inflation and later turned against the Islamic government. Iran’s Supreme Court said people involved in serious crimes such as murder and arson could be given the death penalty.
Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said those responsible for violence would not be spared and blamed America and Israel. The United States supported the protesters and said Iran needs new leadership. More than 24,000 people were arrested, and the death toll may rise further.

ईरान के सर्वोच्च नेता अयातुल्ला अली खामेनेई ने कहा कि हिंसा के जिम्मेदार लोगों को बख्शा नहीं जाएगा और इसके लिए अमेरिका और इजरायल को जिम्मेदार ठहराया। अमेरिका ने प्रदर्शनकारियों का समर्थन किया और कहा कि ईरान को नए नेतृत्व की जरूरत है। 24,000 से ज्यादा लोगों को गिरफ्तार किया गया है और मरने वालों की संख्या आगे बढ़ सकती है।
