The ruins of Spiš Castle in eastern Slovakia form one of the largest castle sites in Central Europe. The castle is located above the town of Spišské Podhradie and the village of Žehra in the region known as Spiš and is considered to be one of the most significant historical monuments in Slovakia. It was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1993.
The construction of Spiš Castle began in the early 12th century, and the castle was gradually expanded and rebuilt over the centuries. At its peak, the castle was a sprawling complex of buildings, including a palace, a chapel, a watchtower, and several fortified walls and gates. The castle was home to many noble families over the centuries and was a center of regional power and culture.
In the 18th century, however, the castle began to fall into disrepair and was eventually abandoned. Today, the castle is a popular tourist destination. Visitors can explore the castle's ruins, which include impressive defensive walls, towers, and a Romanesque chapel. The castle also offers stunning views of the surrounding countryside and the nearby Tatra Mountains.
