A compilation of clips showing the progress of Bolivian rams (Mikrogeophagus altispinosus) from October 2024 to March 2025.
The aquarium was set up in September 2024 and they were added at the end of that month as one of the first tank mates. Gradually throughout the months they kept gaining colors and size. They were under an inch at the start and now they are around 2 inches.
In February 2025, as I was checking the clips to create the supposed update video before, I noticed red "sticks" peeking out the vents of the rams. I went to check on the setup and some of the tetras were also infested. Immediately, I delayed the project and went to acquire the medications for the fish. Fenbendazole was used. It was in powder form and the instructions said that the aquarium water should be dosed but knowing that it is not water-soluble from prior reading and having seen it in real life that it does create a suspension, instead of a solution, when added to water, I went with oral administration instead. A few days after medication, the worms started falling out the fish and frequent water changes had to be done. Some worms needed to be pulled out especially from the rams. Three weeks after the first dose, Fenbendazole was re-administered orally and some, but not as much as before, worms were removed from the rams. The tetras seem to have been cleaned on the first attempt. Only one severely-infested tetra was lost since its hindgut was exposed.
The preparation and delivery of the medication were not documented because my focus was not about creating videos about it. Some parts of showing the worms were shared in "Posts" though. The water was also almost always turbid due to the medicated food and recurrent water changes to get rid of fallen worms.
The aquarium is a "50-gallon breeder" tank with dimensions of around 90*45*45cm/36*18*18inches. The fish community consists of various tetras, pencilfish, whiptail catfish, otocinclus, Siamese algae eater, and most recently added are an Apistogramma and green swordtail livebearers.
