Hyperacusis does not generally go away on its own. People who have found a resolve to their hyperacusis have followed a treatment plan to desensitize themselves to sound.

Is hyperacusis serious?
Hyperacusis is not the same as "recruitment," a disorder that can be a normal consequence of hearing loss and is associated with abnormal perception of sound as the volume increases. The condition can affect children and adults, but is considered rare, occurring in an estimated one in 50,000 people.

Is Misophonia a type of hyperacusis?
While misophonia causes an emotional reaction, hyperacusis results in physical pain in the ears. The degree of pain depends on the volume of the sound, so louder sounds will elicit a more painful reaction. The pain can manifest as pressure or loud ringing in the ears.
