If your turtle tank smells like rotten eggs, you probably want to fix it as soon as possible. In today’s video, I will be answering the question why does my turtle tank smell and give you some tips on how to fix a smelly turtle tank.
Why dos my turtle tank smell?
The main reason your turtle tank smells is because of a weak filter, waste build up, overfeeding, not enough water or water changes, plans/decorations, temperature, room that the tank is in, substrate, or because of the nitrogen cycle.
Below I will go into more detail on how you can address these problems to help get your turtle tank to stop smelling bad.
1) Filter: If your turtle is not strong enough, it might cause a smelly turtle tank. You should make sure that your filter is able to filter 3 times the gallons of your turtle tank per hour. So if you have a 50 gallon tank, your filter should have a GPH (gallons per hour) of at least 150. You should also make sure to clean your filter every couple of weeks to make sure it is performing at its best.
2) Waste build up: You should spot clean your tank every couple of days to help prevent the build up of waste, which can eventually lead to turtle tank odor.
3) Overfeeding: Only feed your turtle the recommended amount for their species and age. Feeding them too much is bad for their health, and it can cause excess waste build up in your tank.
4) Not enough water: Turtle tanks that don’t have enough water will usually smell because the bacteria spreads quicker. Make sure you have around 10 gallons of water for each inch of your turtle’s shell.
5) Infrequent water changes: Make sure that you do a 25% water change at least every two weeks. If your turtle tank continues to smell, you might need to try a 100% water change.
6) Plants or decorations: Sometimes, plants or other decorations might be the source of odor coming from your turtle tank.
7) Temperature: Sometimes, warmer water temperatures can cause your turtle tank to smell more. Therefore, you might want to try decreasing the water temperature by a couple of degrees to help with the smell.
8) Room: If your turtle tank is in a small room with poor ventilation, it might cause the room to smell worse. You should try to keep doors or windows open if your turtle tank is in a small room.
9) Substrate: It is common for waste to get stuck in your turtle tank substrate, which can eventually cause your turtle tank to smell. To help prevent this, make sure to regularly clean the substrate.
10) Nitrogen cycle: The nitrogen cycle occurs whenever you fill your tank up with new water. It can take a couple days or even weeks to become fully cycled, so you may just have to give your tank some time.
I hope this video helped explain why your turtle tank smells. If you follow the guidelines above, your tank should be smelling better in no time.
