The lure of flamingos, particularly free flamingos, was the enticement for a day trip to Lake Elmenteita from Nakuru, Kenya.
Birding in the Great Rift Valley of Kenya is terrific. Besides the flamingos, Lake Elmenteita is home to over 400 species of feathered friends.
Though more often than not, the journey for Matt is as important as the destination. The reasonable hike from the highway to the lake offered many of the local sights, sounds and tastes as found in the Kenyan countryside.
Of note was the several cattle drives as conducted by the Maasai shepherds. Forced by drought conditions in Kenya's south, thousands of cows have been directed hundreds of kilometers toward Elementaita's more fertile grounds.
