Where does the hexagram come from? In the I Ching Appended Judgments XiCi (繫辭), the universe form from the original state of non-being, unidentified, inchoate chaos(混沌) to supreme Ultimate, which is Taiji (太極). From Taiji, it has Yin and Yang combination.

It can be said that is the process of separation of yin and Yang which means, Taiji splits into 2 polarities.

Yang draws as a straight line or undivided line（爻） the line is called Yao in mandarin Yin is drawn as a divided line, which looks like a dash line. So from here, it means when the supreme ultimate in movement, it generates Yang. So Yang means energy is moving, therefore Yang is classified as something energetic.

The division into Yin and Yang established the two bigrams.

When we look at the TaiJi diagram, we know this is the very famous Yin-Yang Fish, which shown all-pervading synergy of Yin and Yang. This meaning in every Yang, there is always exist with a little bit of Yin and there is always some Yang in every Yin.

It generates again into 4 Image (四象) which the Yin itself generates another Yin and Yang and The Yang itself generates another Yin and Yang too. We pulled down each bigram and add Yin and Yang on top of it respectively to make it become 4 images.

This BaGua has a primordial number which means the order of the trigram. Starting number 1 to number 8. This is the way when we turn anything surrounding us into numbers. When a querent asks you a question, simply ask them to give a number and you could turn this number into a trigram.

There is an extension from the 8 trigrams. When we clone another 8 trigrams and put it on top of each trigram. It will have a total of 64 groups which is the sixty-four hexagrams.

Beside this primordial number, you need just to understand how does a trigram being formed will be more than enough.
