An attack which unfolded early on March 3 at the US embassy in Riyadh sparked a small fire, a Saudi defence ministry spokesperson said in a statement. Earlier, witnesses said they had seen smoke rising over the building housing the US mission and heard loud explosions in the diplomatic quarter in Riyadh. In the aftermath, the US embassy issued a shelter in place notification for American citizens in Jeddah, Riyadh and Dhahran.
The Saudi defence ministry later said it had intercepted more than half a dozen drones near capital Riyadh and the city of Al-Kharj.
