STORYLINE:
Russian President Vladimir Putin met with Israel's President and Prime Minister on Thursday as part of a visit to Israel that has been marked by Israeli criticism and disagreements on various issues.
Israeli President Moshe Katsav had greeted Russian President Vladimir Putin at a ceremony at the presidential residence in Jerusalem earlier in the day amid anticipation of serious disagreements that were expected to surface during their meetings.
At the ceremony, Putin examined an honour guard of Israeli soldiers and greeted Jewish, Muslim and Christian religious leaders.
Katsav told Putin that the two countries had a "mutual duty" of fighting anti-Semitism and terrorism.
Before holding talks, both leaders spoke of their wish to increase and broaden the relationship between the two nations.
The Israeli leaders had tough messages on Thursday for Putin on the second day of his historic visit.
They objected to Putin's proposal to host an international Mideast peace conference - an offer he unveiled during his visit to Egypt on Wednesday, his plan to sell anti-aircraft missiles to Syria and his support for Iran's nuclear programme.
Later, in a news conference Putin said Iran must accept international supervision of its nuclear activities.
Israel has criticised Russia's support for Iran's nuclear programme.
The Russian leader insisted on Thursday that Russia was only helping Iran develop nuclear energy for peaceful use.
Addressing Israeli fears that he's affecting the region's balance of power, Putin said in a joint press conference with Katsav that he "strongly opposes any plans from Iran to obtain atomic weapons."
Putin also defended the planned sale of Russian anti-aircraft missiles to Syria, saying the weapons don't pose a threat to Israel.
