The Gemas-Johor Bahru Electrified Double-Track Rail Project (Gemas-JB EDTP), designed to cut travel time between Kuala Lumpur and Johor Bahru from seven to 4.5 hours, is set for completion by April 2025.
Currently 98.1 per cent complete, the project has faced delays due to electrification setbacks, COVID-19 disruptions, and land acquisition issues.
Stations in Genuang, Segamat, Labis, Bekok, and Paloh are already open, with minor adjustments remaining.
The first segment from Gemas to Segamat was initially planned to launch in July, then October, but was postponed due to delayed deliveries of electric train sets (ETS3) from China.
All ETS3 are to be delivered by August 2025.
The 192km project is part of Malaysia’s effort to modernise the west-coast rail line from diesel to electric trains.
The line is expected to serve around 3,000 daily passengers on the Johor Bahru-Kuala Lumpur route.
