It's been seven years since the 2003 allied invasion of Iraq, and with the international focus now on the fighting in Afghanistan, Iraq has moved to the back-burner. But while the days of full-on sectarian war have passed, violence continues on a daily basis.

In fact, two months after national elections were held in March, uncertainty over the Iraqi leadership remains, and this vacuum at the top is being exploited. Last week, in what appeared to be a coordinated wave of suicide bombings, car bombs and shootings occurred in ten locations across Iraq, resulting in 119 deaths in one day. In April, the number of civilian deaths was close to 300.

So the future for hundreds of thousands of Iraqi refugees is now less certain - as are their prospects for return.
