伊豆大島の大島一周道路を走っていると、巨大な地層の縞模様が突如現れます
昭和28年の大島一周道路の建設工事中に偶然発見されたもので、高さ約24m、長さ630mものうねりながら続く地層は、伊豆大島の見どころのひとつになっています
1万5千年もの長い年月をかけて積み重ねた20層の地層は、その見た目から「バームクーヘン」の愛称で親しまれています
While driving along the Izu Oshima Loop Road, you’ll suddenly come across enormous striped rock layers.
These formations were accidentally discovered during the construction of the Loop Road in 1953 (Showa 28). Stretching about 630 meters in length and rising 24 meters high in a graceful wave-like pattern, they have become one of Izu Oshima’s most fascinating sights.
Composed of 20 distinct layers accumulated over 15,000 years, the formation is affectionately known as the “Baumkuchen” for its resemblance to the famous layered cake.
